Algeria: Two drug traffickers sentenced to death

On Sunday, October 18, the Algiers Criminal Court sentenced two individuals to death for importing and trafficking a large quantity of synthetic drugs. The case involved 144 kilograms of ecstasy, amounting to 235,000 pills. These rulings were issued in accordance with the July 2025 law on the prevention and suppression of drug trafficking. This marks the second time the death penalty has been handed down since the implementation of these new penal code provisions, following the sentencing of nine individuals on October 5 for trafficking cocaine and psychotropic substances. Additionally, authorities have stepped up efforts against drug crime, including the conversion of a military barracks in the Tanezrouft desert into a prison facility specifically for drug dealers.
