International investigations have uncovered evidence suggesting that gold looted from Sudan’s central bank and state refinery during the war that began in April 2023 has been reaching markets in the United Arab Emirates. Reports indicate that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized over 1.5 tons of gold, valued at approximately $100 million, which was then smuggled through Juba and other transit points using both civilian and military cargo aircraft. Concerns are mounting that the proceeds from this gold are being funneled into weapons procurement and military operations. Despite official denials from the UAE regarding support for the RSF, investigative findings and UN reports highlight a complex network of middlemen and front companies involved in laundering the illicit gold. Consequently, the European Union has implemented a ban on the import of Sudanese gold to curb the financing of the ongoing hostilities and address the lack of transparency in supply chains.
