The Algerian automotive sector is undergoing a major shift as imports of Chinese vehicles reached 190,045 units during the first eight months of 2026, ranking Algeria tenth globally among importers of Chinese cars. This increase aligns with a 51% global growth in China's automotive exports compared to 2025. Meanwhile, the commercial footprint of traditional European manufacturers like Renault, Volkswagen, and Peugeot has diminished, while Stellantis continues its operations through the Fiat plant in Oran. Consumers are increasingly turning to Chinese models due to their competitive pricing and the prevalence of private individual imports in the face of reduced commercial new car shipments.
