Osteoporosis: Understanding the Silent Disease and the Power of Early Screening

Osteoporosis is a silent threat that often goes unnoticed until a fracture occurs. According to Prof. Belal Benkenna from Beni Messous Hospital, approximately 30% of women and 20% of men over 50 are affected. The decline in sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone accelerates bone loss, making the skeleton prone to serious injuries. To prevent severe complications and loss of mobility, medical professionals recommend bone density testing for women aged 65 and older, and men aged 70 and older, especially for those at higher risk due to treatments like cortisone. Prof. Abdennour Boukabous emphasizes that long-term bone health is built early through a balanced diet and regular exercise. Furthermore, he highlights the importance of collaboration between rheumatologists and dentists to manage medication side effects. Early detection and healthy lifestyle choices are essential to mitigating the risks of this chronic condition.
