France seeks urgent increase in Algerian energy supplies

Reports suggest that Paris has formally requested Algeria to boost its oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments as soon as possible. This move follows France's efforts to secure its energy supply amidst ongoing internal social unrest and global supply concerns. Sources indicate that Algeria may be able to adjust oil exports, but increasing LNG shipments is constrained by Sonatrach's existing contractual obligations to other global customers. The request coincides with a period of long-standing diplomatic tension between the two nations, despite France becoming a critical market for Algerian crude, with import volumes reaching 138,000 barrels per day during April 2026.
