Italy Begins Public Consultations for Electrical Interconnection Project with Algeria

Italian company ZHERO has launched a series of consultations with local residents and authorities in the Liguria region regarding the "AI-Link" project. This major initiative aims to transport clean energy generated in the Algerian desert to Italy through a 900-kilometer subsea cable. The project is expected to deliver at least 10 TWh of electricity annually, sufficient to power 4 million Italian households. Fully funded by private sources, the scheme aligns with broader energy partnership strategies between Europe and North Africa, such as the "Mattei Plan." Current public hearings are designed to discuss the placement of technical infrastructure required to link the cable to the Italian national grid, as part of the official licensing process overseen by the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security.
