UN Fourth Committee: Global Support for Sahrawi Self-Determination and Resource Protection

During the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee meetings, several nations reaffirmed their support for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination. Countries including China, Iran, Namibia, Timor-Leste, and Zimbabwe emphasized the need to conclude the decolonization process in line with international law. Namibia warned against the illegal exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources without the consent of its people, citing rulings from the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Justice. Beijing called for a fair and lasting solution within the UN framework, while Iran stressed the necessity of meaningful Sahrawi participation in political efforts. Additionally, Timor-Leste and Zimbabwe urged for a free and fair referendum to allow the Sahrawi people to determine their future, while also supporting enhanced human rights monitoring in the region.
