During a session of the Fourth Committee at the UN General Assembly in New York, Algeria's Permanent Representative, Amar Bendjama, reiterated his country's firm support for the decolonization process in Western Sahara. He stated that the legal status of the territory is established as a non-self-governing territory, emphasizing that the Sahrawi people hold the sole sovereign right to determine their political future. Bendjama criticized efforts to impose pre-arranged settlements, insisting that negotiations must remain a genuine path toward a solution rather than a means to enforce predetermined outcomes. He also called on the international community to sustain humanitarian assistance for Sahrawi refugees, cautioning against the politicization of aid or using it as a tool of pressure. He urged the UN to uphold international law to achieve a lasting and just peace in the region.
