Around thirty French mayors have called for the formal recognition of the October 17, 1961 massacres as a "State crime." The officials are urging the government to include this date in the official calendar of national commemorations. Marking the 65th anniversary of the tragedy, they recall how peaceful Algerian protesters in Paris were met with extreme police violence under the authority of prefect Maurice Papon, resulting in numerous deaths and victims being thrown into the Seine. The signatories are also requesting broader access to historical archives regarding the Algerian War, the establishment of memorial sites, support for survivors and victims' families, and the integration of this history into educational programs for younger generations.
