Western Sahara: Spain aligns with international law at the UN

The United Nations Fourth Committee has adopted a resolution confirming the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, highlighting a significant shift in Spain's diplomatic stance. By voting in favor of the resolution, Spain has returned to international legality, while France abstained from the vote. This development marks a setback for Morocco's efforts to justify its control over Western Sahara. The UN body reaffirmed that the issue is a matter of decolonization, dismissing Rabat's alternative proposals. As most member states supported the UN principles, Morocco found itself increasingly isolated, eventually voting for the resolution itself despite it contradicting its own annexation policies. Only the United States and Israel voted against the measure.
