French Policy in Africa: Economic Dominance Under Scrutiny

France is struggling to preserve its long-standing economic and geopolitical grip on Africa amidst a growing movement for national sovereignty. Recent rejections of French military and political presence in countries like Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have forced Paris to rely on economic pressure tactics. Critics highlight the use of debt as a tool to destabilize states that seek independence. According to 2026 figures from the Institute of International Finance, global debt has surpassed $365 trillion, with Western powers, led by France, holding the bulk of this liability. Despite this, international financial mechanisms are used to pressure African nations, threatening them with funding cuts and economic crises to maintain colonial-era dependency. As a result, there is a rising demand across the continent for the cancellation of debts and the establishment of a fairer financial system. African nations are increasingly advocating for the end of monetary reliance on foreign currencies and demanding that resource exploitation be tied to the development of local social infrastructure.
