Algeria launches new decontamination operation for French nuclear test sites
As part of its ongoing efforts to clean up sites affected by former French nuclear tests, Algeria commenced the second phase of decontaminating the "Beryl 2E" tunnel in the In Eker region of Tamanrasset on November 1st. Overseen by the Ministry of National Defense and the National Agency for the Rehabilitation of Former Nuclear Test Sites, the project is executed entirely by national experts. This initiative comes despite France's continued refusal to disclose maps and archives concerning nuclear waste burial sites, which hinder development in areas like In Eker and Reggane. The Algerian state has mobilized significant resources to ensure the operation meets international safety standards, including the isolation of radioactive waste in specialized concrete containers.
