Green Dam project: significant progress in reforestation and ecosystem restoration
The General Directorate of Forests reports substantial progress in the Green Dam rehabilitation program, with over 42,000 hectares planted between 2023 and 2026. Plans for the 2026-2027 season include covering nearly 48,000 hectares with diverse forest, fruit, and pastoral species. Officially launched by the President in October 2023 in Djelfa with a budget of 75 billion dinars, the project aims to combat desertification across 13 wilayas. The initiative has significantly supported rural farmers by planting millions of olive and carob trees. Furthermore, the sector is actively developing national forest assets by establishing recreational forests and granting exploitation licenses, which provide income sources for thousands of beneficiaries while promoting local economic development and biodiversity conservation.
