Benjamin Stora Advocates for Comprehensive Strategy on French-Algerian Historical Memory
Speaking at the 29th Algiers International Book Fair, French historian Benjamin Stora emphasized the need for a holistic approach to address historical memory between Algeria and France. Stora argued that official apologies for colonial crimes are insufficient, calling for broader initiatives involving education, archives, and historical testimony. He highlighted the persistent lack of awareness in France regarding the Algerian national movement and cautioned against attempts to undermine Algeria’s historical identity. Discussing his latest book, which analyzes the power of visual records during the 1954–1962 war, he explored how colonial violence has historically been concealed. Regarding his 2021 report commissioned by President Emmanuel Macron, Stora described the progress as mixed, noting a recent deceleration in reconciliation efforts, which he attributed in part to political pressure from the French far-right.
