Former German Intelligence Chief Arrested in Espionage Scandal

German authorities have detained August Hanning, the former head of the BND (foreign intelligence), over allegations of treason and leaking state secrets. Prosecutors accuse him of collaborating with a foreign intelligence agency since 2010. He reportedly received nearly 2,000 classified documents from Manfred D., a former aide who remained within the agency until 2026. The documents, which included sensitive intelligence regarding Russian military capabilities and Iran’s nuclear program, were allegedly sold for money and later utilized by Hanning in his private security consultancy. The espionage plot was uncovered accidentally in September 2025 during a police search of Hanning's home, related to an investigation into a child custody dispute involving Christina Block. The current head of the BND, Martin Jaeger, confirmed that a comprehensive internal investigation is underway.
