Western Sahara: Russian veto halts expansionist efforts
Russia’s use of its veto against a US-drafted resolution on Western Sahara has underscored the necessity of upholding international law. The US proposal sought to prioritize the Moroccan autonomy plan while sidelining the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. Algeria expressed deep regret over the non-renewal of the MINURSO mandate, criticizing the resolution’s blatant bias, which aimed to legitimize the status quo rather than pursuing a just political solution. Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, warned against treating self-determination as a political bargaining chip. He emphasized that the rights of peoples under occupation in both Western Sahara and Palestine cannot be traded. Experts note that the Russian veto has reset the conflict within its proper framework as a decolonization issue, thwarting attempts to impose a predetermined settlement that disregards UN principles.
