Foot-and-mouth disease: Clarification on cattle import restrictions
The General Directorate of Veterinary Services has specified that the temporary suspension of live cattle imports, implemented to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, applies strictly to animals intended for breeding and fattening. Cattle destined for slaughter and the import of meat products remain unaffected by these restrictions. This decision follows the reporting of foot-and-mouth disease cases in certain eastern regions of the country. Consequently, authorities have also closed several local livestock markets to mitigate the risk of viral transmission.
