International observers expelled from Laâyoune
On Thursday, October 29, Moroccan authorities expelled two international human rights observers from the city of Laâyoune in Western Sahara. The individuals, identified as Andre Christopher Billettest (American-Norwegian) and Marianne Boge Stavik (Norwegian), arrived in the city to monitor human rights conditions and interview local activists. Following a meeting with Sahrawi rights advocate Sidi Mohammed Daddach and families of 'Gdeim Izik' political prisoners, they were confronted by plainclothes officers. Declared 'unwelcome' in the territory, the observers were forcibly taken to the Moroccan city of Agadir. This incident adds to a long list of over 330 foreign observers, including lawyers and journalists, who have been denied access or expelled from the region since 2014.
