Russia-Africa Summit: Tebboune calls for UN Security Council reform and stronger strategic cooperation
At the third Russia-Africa summit held in Moscow in October 2026, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized the urgent need to restructure the UN system, stating that reforming the Security Council is a matter of global justice to correct the historic marginalization of Africa. He reaffirmed Algeria's commitment to a strategic partnership with Russia based on sovereignty and equality. Regarding Western Sahara, Tebboune welcomed Russia's support for the UN process, asserting that regional stability requires ending colonial legacies. On security, he argued that fighting terrorism demands a comprehensive developmental approach rather than purely military measures, highlighting continental infrastructure projects like the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline. The President denounced foreign interference in African affairs, urged for home-grown solutions to local crises, and reiterated Algeria's steadfast support for an independent Palestinian state. He also warned of climate change impacts, demanding that the international community fulfill its financial and technical commitments to the continent.
