Algeria achieves self-sufficiency in durum wheat and barley production
Algeria has reached a significant milestone in its agricultural sector for the 2025-2026 season by achieving self-sufficiency in durum wheat and barley. According to Abdelghani Benali of the National Professional Cereal Council, the country produced between 33 and 35 million quintals, successfully covering domestic requirements estimated at 23 to 26 million quintals. This success is attributed to favorable rainfall, improved farming techniques, and the efforts of agricultural workers. It is important to note that this milestone does not currently extend to common wheat, for which self-sufficiency remains a long-term goal dependent on shifting dietary habits. The authorities are now focused on stabilizing these gains through investments in irrigation, better equipment, and storage infrastructure.
