New decrees to regulate medicine prescriptions and dietary supplements

Health Minister Mohamed Seddik Aït Messaoudane announced that the Council of Ministers had approved two draft executive decrees. One sets the conditions and procedures for prescribing pharmaceutical products; the other defines the technical characteristics of dietary supplements intended for human use.

Speaking at the second International Pharmacy Conference, held today, the minister said the decree on pharmaceutical prescriptions is completing the procedures required for publication in the Official Gazette. It is intended to clarify the rules governing prescriptions and dispensing, and to encourage the responsible use of medicines. The supplements decree is also in the process of publication. It reserves dispensing these products exclusively to pharmacists, with the stated aims of guiding consumers towards proper use, improving safety and quality, and reducing the risks of uncontrolled or excessive consumption.

The minister said the supplements measure also marks a step towards a modern national framework aligned with international references and standards and designed to protect consumers.

On health planning, Aït Messaoudane said his ministry would establish and develop a national health map and update it on an ongoing basis. The aim is to match health services to the population’s actual needs, bring them closer to residents and improve regional equity. The map will cover different parts of the health sector, including pharmacies and medical testing laboratories. It will also help guide the balanced distribution of medical equipment and personnel according to each region’s needs, supporting care quality and fair access to health services across the country.
