Western Sahara: Algerian petitioners urge UN to finalize decolonization process

Before the UN General Assembly's Fourth Committee, Algerian speakers reaffirmed the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence. They demanded the completion of the decolonization process and the protection of the territory's natural resources, opposing attempts to impose a fait accompli. Dr. Adel Ghebouli of the Algerian National Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People highlighted the decades-long humanitarian struggle and the suffering of displaced generations. MP Fatma Bensafi insisted that the Western Sahara issue is fundamentally a matter of decolonization, stressing that any political solution must reflect the will of the Sahrawi people through a referendum under the mandate of MINURSO. Researcher Ali Kafssi challenged claims of historical sovereignty by citing the 1975 International Court of Justice ruling, while condemning the exploitation of resources and unilateral measures on the ground. Despite interruptions from the Moroccan delegation during the sessions, the petitioners maintained that international law and the right to self-determination must prevail over power dynamics.
