Algeria’s Strategic Shift: A Security Overview of the Last 15 Months
Over the past 15 months, Algeria has significantly hardened its security framework. Following the July 2025 enactment of the general mobilization law, the President gained the authority to act in cases of existential threats. In early 2026, new legislation permitting the revocation of nationality for serious offenses abroad was adopted despite human rights concerns. Security measures also included transforming a military barracks in Tinzaouatine into a high-security prison for drug traffickers, and amending the Penal Code in October 2026 to include the death penalty for forest arson and child abduction. Marking a historic change in its diplomatic doctrine, Algeria also received parliamentary approval in October to deploy military units to Niger to protect Sonatrach’s oil infrastructure.
