Bousselam: Dried figs become a major economic asset in the Babors region

At the foot of Mount Takintoucht in the Bousselam region, fig cultivation is booming, turning once-unused land into thriving orchards. Dried figs have become a crucial source of income for local families. Wholesale prices range from 300 DZD to 2,300 DZD per kilogram depending on the variety and quality. Producers face significant financial burdens, including labor costs and the intensive requirements of caprification. The industry is currently battling fraudulent practices, where substandard figs from other regions are mixed with local produce, potentially damaging the brand's reputation. To achieve export viability, experts suggest moving toward industrial-scale drying and modern packaging facilities to maintain high standards and remain competitive in international markets.
