Kylian Mbappé faces backlash in China over controversial remarks
French captain Kylian Mbappé has sparked outrage in China following a circulating video in which he mocked the late leader Mao Zedong, referring to him indirectly as a dictator. The Chinese Football Association has demanded a public apology. As a result, major sponsors Dongpeng and Mengniu have terminated their contracts with the player, and Chinese state television has halted the broadcast of La Liga interviews. Mbappé and his media team have since deleted the video and issued an apology on Twitter. La Liga president Javier Tebas has also apologized for the incident, amid concerns from Real Madrid regarding the potential financial fallout in the critical Chinese market.
