Abdelaziz Rahabi warns of international maneuvers regarding Western Sahara settlement
Former Algerian diplomat Abdelaziz Rahabi has warned against U.S. and French efforts within the UN Security Council to reshape the settlement path for Western Sahara. Rahabi stated that ongoing efforts aim to convert the MINURSO mission into a vehicle for adopting the Moroccan autonomy plan, effectively abandoning its original mandate to hold a self-determination referendum. The diplomat noted that these moves include pressures to terminate the peacekeeping mission by 2027 and attempts to bypass the Polisario Front by seeking alternative representatives. He criticized the use of the Security Council to impose preconditions on negotiations, asserting that the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination remains a fundamental principle that cannot be compromised by foreign political agendas.
