Sahrawi Refugee Camps See Massive Protests Demanding Self-Determination
On Thursday, the Aousserd refugee camp hosted large-scale demonstrations where participants of all generations reiterated their steadfast commitment to the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence. Demonstrators marched through the camp carrying national flags and slogans reaffirming their support for the Polisario Front as their sole legitimate representative. They rejected any political settlement that fails to ensure their right to choose their future, specifically dismissing proposals for autonomy. Speakers at the event emphasized that over five decades of sacrifice sustain their pursuit of freedom. These protests, which reflect ongoing mobilization in camps like El Aaiun, Boujdour, Dakhla, and Smara, occur as the UN Security Council prepares to address the status of Western Sahara.
