Trans-Saharan gas pipeline can advance African energy integration, Arkab says

Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, said energy security and stronger competitiveness also depend on developing infrastructure and improving links between energy regions.

Speaking at NAPEC 2026, the Africa and Mediterranean Energy and Hydrogen Exhibition and Conference, Arkab described the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project as part of Algeria’s vision to connect African resources with Mediterranean and European markets. He said the project is more than a route for exporting gas: it can help add value to resources, strengthen continental integration, develop infrastructure and widen access to energy, while bringing economic and social benefits to transit countries.

Arkab reported significant progress in the project’s technical and economic studies. He also said work on the Algerian section began last June in the Aoulef area of Adrar province, following the project’s fifth ministerial meeting. Algeria’s approach, he said, is to advance the corridor realistically, through coordination and responsibly, while taking technical, commercial, security and financial requirements into account.

He also pointed to the growing connection between energy security, water security and industrial development, particularly in the region. Algeria is continuing to expand its seawater desalination capacity and improve coordination among water, energy, industry and infrastructure policies. These efforts are also creating new prospects for investment in equipment and technological solutions.
