France considers restricting access to social media during civil unrest
The French government is facing controversy following reports that it asked major telecom operators—Orange, SFR, Free, and Bouygues Telecom—to prepare for the potential suspension of access to platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and X. This measure aims to curb the use of these services to organize and coordinate riots. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal have argued that such actions are necessary to prevent the spread of violence, citing the precedent of New Caledonia in 2024. However, telecommunications companies have raised concerns regarding the technical and legal difficulties of such a move. On October 23, the government officially announced enhanced cooperation with social platforms to fast-track the removal of content inciting violence. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez recently noted that, according to the Council of State, such restrictions could be implemented in extreme, strictly defined circumstances.
