The Gdeim Izik group members, on an indefinite hunger strike since September 23, are protesting against Moroccan authorities' failure to fulfill promises regarding their prison conditions, such as medical access and family visits. Meanwhile, a draft resolution currently before the UN Security Council, backed by the U.S. and France, pushes for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty. Sidi Mohamed Omar, the Polisario Front's representative to the UN, condemned this as a serious departure from international law. Former UN envoy Christopher Ross also criticized the proposal, arguing that it disregards the right to self-determination and threatens to exacerbate regional instability.
