Report: Algeria's diaspora represents an untapped economic opportunity
A report from the think tank CARE highlights that Algeria is not fully leveraging the economic potential of its diaspora. Official remittances stood at $1.94 billion in 2024, a figure considered low compared to regional peers like Morocco and Egypt. The report points to the significant gap between the official and parallel exchange rates—estimated at 55%—as the primary reason why capital flows largely bypass formal banking channels, with an estimated $8 to $18 billion moving through informal circuits annually. CARE suggests reforming the exchange rate system and creating tailored financial products to attract these funds. Additionally, the report emphasizes the role of the diaspora in the tech sector, noting that 15% of Algerian startups feature at least one co-founder from the diaspora, highlighting the importance of their expertise and international network.
