In an effort to diversify its economy and move beyond oil and gas reliance, Algeria is accelerating the development of its mining sector by drawing on Uzbekistan's industrial experience. Minister of Mines and Mining Industry Mourad Hanifi led a delegation to Tashkent from October 5 to 8 to explore strategic cooperation. Discussions with Uzbek officials focused on technology transfer, digital mapping, and the local processing of mineral resources—key pillars for Algeria’s current projects like Gara Djebilet, the Amizour zinc deposits, and the Bled El Hadba phosphate mines. The visit included tours of mining complexes and research institutes to better understand modern extraction and refining techniques. By fostering partnerships and encouraging joint investments, Algeria aims to build a robust mining value chain and improve its geological expertise. As the country works to attract innovative foreign direct investment, it views Uzbekistan—a global leader in gold, copper, and uranium production—as a benchmark for establishing a sustainable, high-value mining industry.
