In Ekker: New cleanup operation launched for French nuclear waste sites
Coinciding with the 72nd anniversary of the start of the Revolution, Algeria has initiated a second phase of decontamination regarding nuclear waste left by French colonial rule in In Ekker, Tamanrasset. The operation, managed by national specialists, involves identifying radioactive zones, collecting waste, and securing it in specialized concrete containers in accordance with international safety standards. The Ministry of National Defense highlighted significant challenges in this task, noting that France refuses to provide the necessary maps and documentation regarding burial sites. Despite these obstacles, Algeria remains committed to decontaminating these areas and rehabilitating the regions affected by historical nuclear testing to ensure environmental safety.
