New Electronic Implant Offers Hope for Vision Restoration
Science Corporation has secured European regulatory approval for its PRIMA medical device, aimed at treating age-related macular degeneration. The device has also received a special designation from the US FDA to expedite the review process for treating rare forms of blindness. The system uses a microchip implanted behind the eye via a one-hour surgery, working in tandem with camera-equipped glasses that stimulate the retina to restore functional vision. CEO Max Hodak reported that the technology, acquired through the purchase of France's Pixium Vision, has enabled patients to read and perform complex visual tasks. The company plans to launch the device in Germany this September and is negotiating with insurers to cover costs. Future plans include more advanced hardware and research into direct brain-computer interface sensors.
