International report analyzes the diplomatic rift between Algeria and the UAE
An analysis by the International Crisis Group, prepared by senior analyst Mickaël Bashir Ayari, details the cumulative tensions that led Algeria to sever diplomatic ties with the UAE on September 10, 2026. The report identifies conflicting regional strategies as the root cause of this breakdown. Key points of contention include the 2020 normalization of relations between the UAE and Israel, as well as Emirati support for Morocco regarding the Western Sahara issue, symbolized by the opening of a consulate in Laayoune. Algeria has also voiced concerns over potential foreign interference in its internal affairs, pointing to reports of alleged contacts between the "MAK" movement and Emirati figures. In the Sahel, expanding Emirati activities in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso are viewed by Algeria as a challenge to its security, particularly given the competition over energy transit projects. The study further examines the opposing stances taken by both nations in the Libyan and Sudanese conflicts, where they have backed different sides, while noting that some allegations remain unproven by definitive evidence.
