France, alongside Germany, Canada, Denmark, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, has formally opposed the sanctions imposed by the United States on the International Criminal Court (ICC). In a joint statement, these eight countries reaffirmed their support for the Court's independence and warned of the negative impact these measures will have on its staff and operations. The sanctions, announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, include freezing the Court's assets and restricting financial services, under the justification of protecting American citizens. Rubio has declared an intent to dismantle the institution if it continues its current path. These tensions have escalated since the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli officials Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant in November 2024 for alleged war crimes in Gaza. The ICC has rejected these sanctions, labeling them an attack on the rule of law, and has urged its member states to ensure the continuity of its mandate.
