Western Sahara: Amar Bendjama reaffirms self-determination at the UN Security Council
Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, thanked Russia for introducing the draft resolution to extend the mandate of the MINURSO mission. Speaking at the Security Council, Bendjama emphasized that self-determination remains the fundamental basis for resolving the Western Sahara issue. He noted that negotiations require genuine engagement from all parties, affirming that both Algeria and Mauritania have participated in the political process in good faith. The diplomat questioned whether the concerns raised by Algeria had been duly considered and criticized the logic of imposing a status quo. Stressing that refugees are human beings rather than mere statistics, he concluded that Algeria, having achieved its own right to self-determination at a great price, remains committed to promoting a fair and lasting solution that is acceptable to all parties involved.
