Algeria strengthens national water security with major infrastructure projects
The government is proactively reinforcing Algeria's water security to prevent future shortages through a massive 1,469 billion DZD investment program. The country currently relies on 82 dams, which are at approximately 60% capacity, with three more scheduled for completion this year and plans for 28 others. Desalination plays a key role, with 19 major plants currently producing 3.6 million cubic meters daily, meeting 40% of the population's needs. Upcoming infrastructure includes critical water transfer networks in regions like Setif and the South, alongside the expansion of wastewater treatment facilities. These 237 existing plants, which process 1.12 billion cubic meters of water, are increasingly being repurposed to support industrial and agricultural development.
