French far-right leader Marine Le Pen is facing a legal crisis that could jeopardize her ability to run in the 2027 presidential election. Former Cour de cassation judge Didier Guérin stated that Le Pen remains ineligible to run due to an initial court ruling regarding her ineligibility, arguing that her pending appeal does not cancel the immediate enforcement of the penalty. The case stems from her March 2025 conviction for the embezzlement of European parliamentary assistant funds, which resulted in a prison sentence, a fine, and a ban from public office. Although an appellate court reduced the sentence in July 2026, legal experts remain divided on the effect of the cassation appeal. Le Pen’s legal team has filed a complaint against Guérin with the High Council of the Judiciary, accusing him of breaching judicial discretion. Le Pen herself contests this interpretation, citing the stance of Prosecutor General Rémy Heitz, which contradicts Guérin's assessment.
