Local Elections: Rising registration and candidacy figures defy abstention narratives

Saïd Arous, head of the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE), stated that the surge in new voter registrations and the increase in candidates for the November 28 local elections disprove claims of electoral apathy. He emphasized that current data reflects a clear commitment from citizens and political entities compared to the 2021 polls. Arous urged voters to participate in the upcoming date responsibly and consciously. He reassured that the authority remains dedicated to transparency, neutrality, and equal opportunity, in line with presidential mandates regarding constitutional respect. Furthermore, he clarified that rejected candidacy files were based on legal grounds with available avenues for appeal, and that the candidate substitution process remains open until October 28. The authority continues to prioritize dialogue with political stakeholders as a foundation for the electoral process.
