Niger: Beyond the military deployment, Algeria's economic challenge
The recent parliamentary vote in Algeria to deploy troops beyond its borders is a historic move that sets the stage for a major regional strategy. The primary focus is the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline, a 4,128-kilometer project connecting Nigeria to Hassi R’Mel. While Algeria has already begun excavation, Niger is currently at the topographical survey stage, making this corridor critical for establishing Algeria as a bridge between West Africa and Europe. By securing Sonatrach's facilities, Algeria aims to provide the stability required to attract investors to the Sahel. To ensure this presence is successful and beneficial to local populations, the strategy must pivot toward three pillars: creating local jobs, developing infrastructure to boost trade, and empowering Algerian SMEs to operate in the region through better financial support and export insurance. Ultimately, this initiative marks a transition from a purely military presence to a lasting economic engagement driven by engineers and entrepreneurs.
