Amman and Damascus form joint committee to address fallout from southern Syria airstrikes
Amman and Damascus have established a joint security and field committee to manage the repercussions of recent Jordanian airstrikes in southern Syria. The military operation, named "Jordanian Deterrence – Hamoud," was launched by Jordan in response to an attack on a church in Kerak. Jordan stated that its fighter jets targeted terrorist strongholds, resulting in the death of over 20 militants and the destruction of weapons depots. Conversely, the Syrian government reported civilian casualties, including children, and condemned the strikes as a breach of national sovereignty, noting that no prior coordination occurred. Consequently, Syria has temporarily closed the Nassib border crossing to all travel and trade to ensure safety amid the ongoing tensions. Both governments are currently engaged in diplomatic communications to address the situation and prevent further escalation along their shared border.
