Algerian sauce sparks culinary curiosity in Japan
The "Algerian sauce," known for its inspiration from the traditional "Mahdjouba" filling, has become a topic of great interest in Japan. Following a viral post on X featuring the sauce paired with sushi, Japanese users began showing curiosity about its ingredients and preparation rather than criticizing the fusion. Many have started making it at home to pair with salmon, shrimp, and fried foods. Meanwhile, the Algerian culinary presence in Tokyo is growing with the opening of "Pouletori" in the Shitaya district in April 2025. Managed by an Algerian resident, the restaurant serves diverse dishes including couscous, Garantita, and djouaz, offering a gateway for Japanese patrons to explore the depth of Algerian food culture.
