Algeria seeks to update EU partnership to boost non-oil exports
Algeria is looking to bolster its industrial and agricultural exports to Europe by revising the 2005 association agreement with the European Union. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has called for a clause-by-clause review based on a "win-win" framework, aiming to better reflect the nation’s current production capabilities and reduce reliance on hydrocarbon exports, which dominated trade figures in 2025. Beyond the legal framework, Algerian companies are navigating the European market's new environmental challenges. As of 2026, the EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism requires exporters of goods such as steel, cement, and fertilizers to track and account for their carbon footprint. Meeting these strict environmental standards, alongside the trade agreement revision, is essential for Algeria to successfully diversify its commercial presence in Europe.
