Algiers Book Fair: Publishers grapple with rising production costs

The Algiers International Book Fair is currently experiencing high attendance, though many visitors remain concerned about the price of books. Publishers are struggling with escalating production costs, specifically rising paper prices, expensive imported raw materials, and maintenance challenges for printing equipment. Veterans of the industry report that these costs have surged significantly since 2020, forcing them to raise book prices to remain operational. While newer publishers view the market differently, the sector as a whole faces a delicate challenge: balancing the need to cover production expenses with the importance of keeping books affordable for the public amid current economic pressures.
