France moves to expand nuclear deterrence footprint across Europe

Paris is coordinating with ten European nations to expand its nuclear capabilities, involving the potential deployment of Rafale jets equipped for nuclear payloads. Under the framework of "advanced deterrence," the project aims to enhance military flexibility, though France insists it will retain sole authority over its nuclear decision-making. Partners in these discussions include the UK, Germany, Poland, and Nordic states, though Italy has refused to participate and Finland has ruled out hosting nuclear weapons. Moscow has responded with strong warnings, describing the initiative as a direct strategic threat and cautioning that any locations hosting such French weaponry would be prioritized as military targets in the event of a major escalation.
