Algeria Launches National Research Network to Bolster Food Security and Animal Health
As part of a strategy to align scientific research with economic development, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari, inaugurated a thematic research network for animal production and health on October 27, 2026, at the National School of Agronomy in El Harrach. The initiative gathers over 300 researchers, professors, and 100 PhD students across 70 laboratories, while leveraging the expertise of Algerian scientists abroad. The network aims to achieve food sovereignty through practical projects, including the development of new sheep breeds, innovative livestock feed, and natural alternatives to antibiotics. With the first results expected within six months, the program seeks to transition the university from a theoretical environment into a driving force for national production and reduced reliance on imported agricultural supplies.
