Algeria Strengthens Breast Cancer Screening and Treatment Infrastructure

Breast cancer accounts for 45% of female cancer cases in Algeria, with 14,074 new diagnoses each year and an average onset age of 47. Recognizing this as a national priority, the Ministry of Health has launched an intensified nationwide screening campaign during 'Pink October'. The country currently manages patient care through 15 specialized cancer centers and 24 radiotherapy departments, with plans to add 16 linear accelerators by 2028. Additionally, 52 innovative treatments have been integrated into the national healthcare system. A key development is the deployment of the first connected mobile clinic. This unit, equipped with digital mammography, transmits imaging data to the Pierre-et-Marie-Curie Center in Algiers for remote expert analysis, ensuring results are delivered within 24 hours. The caravan will travel across various provinces until January 2027 to improve early detection.
