Abi Bechraya El Bachir, special advisor to the Sahrawi president, has warned against efforts to remove the Western Sahara conflict from its legal framework as a decolonization issue. The official cautioned against turning the settlement process into a political trade-off, where Morocco links its normalization with Israel to obtaining international support for its position at the UN Security Council. This approach of 'Middle Easternizing' the conflict, as he described, carries risks that could extend beyond the region. El Bachir affirmed that the Polisario Front, the legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, rejects any imposed solution that ignores the right to self-determination. He stated that the autonomy proposal lacks legal legitimacy and that recent diplomatic talks with Washington are part of the ongoing UN agenda. He concluded that any fair resolution must strictly adhere to the UN Charter and international law rather than narrow geopolitical interests.
