Passing of Ali Haroun: A Witness to Algeria’s Turbulent History

Ali Haroun, a prominent lawyer and former leader of the FLN’s France Federation, has passed away at the age of 99. A central figure in contemporary Algerian history, Haroun was involved in the nation’s struggle for independence and later played a significant role in its political landscape. He served as a Minister of Human Rights in 1991 and was a member of the High Council of State (HCE) in 1992. He is best remembered for his role in convincing Mohamed Boudiaf to return from exile to lead the country. Throughout his life, Haroun maintained his defense of the 1992 electoral process suspension, arguing it was necessary to protect the state. An accomplished author who documented the FLN’s activities in France, his death marks the loss of one of the last remaining eyewitnesses of Algeria's post-independence political transition.
